چکیده

We show how to transform UML (Uniied Modeling Language) state diagrams into graphs by making explicit the intended semantics of the diagram. The process of state expansion in nested state diagrams is explained by graph transformations in three steps: (1) adding boundary nodes introducing a precise interface for the state to be expanded, (2) expanding the state, and (3) removing the boundary nodes. The general idea of approaching the semantics of UML diagrams by graph transformations is applicable to other forms of UML diagrams as well. The main advantage of the graph transformation approach is the closeness between the (mathematical) graph representation and the (UML) diagram representation.

A Graph-Based Semantics for UML Class and Object Diagrams

In this paper we propose a formal extension of type graphs with notions that are commonplace in the UML and have long proven their worth in that context: namely, inheritance, multiplicity, containment and the like. We believe the absence of a comprehensive and commonly agreed upon formalisation of these notions to be an important and, unfortunately, often ignored omission. Since our eventual ai...

Specifying behavioral semantics of UML diagrams through graph transformations

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) has been widely accepted as a standard for modeling software systems from various perspectives. The intuitive notations of UML diagrams greatly improve the communication among developers. However, the lack of a formal semantics makes it difficult to automate analysis and verification. This paper offers a graphical yet formal approach to specifying the behavio...

A Typed Attributed Graph Grammar with Inheritance for the Abstract Syntax of UML Class and Sequence Diagrams

According to the UML Standard 2.0 class and sequence diagrams are defined in a descriptive way by a MOF meta-model and semi-formal constraints. This paper presents a formal and constructive definition of the abstract syntax of UML class and sequence diagrams based on the well-defined theory of typed attributed graph transformation with inheritance and application conditions. The generated langu...

Branching Time Semantics for UML 2.0 Sequence Diagrams

This paper presents formal definitions for UML Sequences Diagrams based on branching time semantics and partial orders in a denotational style. The obtained graphs are close to lattices and specify faithfully the intended behaviors rather than trace based semantics. We also define few generalized algebraic operations on graphs so that it makes it easy to provide formal definitions in a composit...
